Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and the organic polymer povidone, which enhances its properties compared to elemental iodine. This polymerization allows for a prolonged germicidal effect as it slowly releases elemental iodine, resulting in lower toxicity. It exhibits rapid microbicidal activity against a wide spectrum of pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts, and is also sporicidal. It remains effective even in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water, without staining. Povimax may not be safe during pregnancy due to limited human studies and known harmful effects in animal studies. Discuss with your doctor for a risk-benefit assessment. Povimax is generally safe for breastfeeding, as it does not significantly enter breast milk and poses no harm to the infant.
Cream or Ointment:
Povimax may cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of skin and mucous membranes. Use on severe burns or large areas of denuded skin may result in systemic adverse effects, including metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia, and impaired renal function. It may also affect thyroid function tests.
Povidone Iodine may interact with strong alkalis, sodium thiosulfate, sodium metabisulfite, and thiomersal. Concurrent use of lithium may induce hypothyroidic effects.
Cream or Ointment: Consult a physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns. Discontinue use and consult if redness, irritation, swelling, or pain worsens or if infection occurs.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contaminating the ophthalmic solution dropper tip. Do not use the solution after one month from the first opening.
